Roses achieves Biosphere destination certification for its commitment to tourism sustainability
Roses has obtained the Biosphere Certified seal after verifying the correct implementation of sustainable practices aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Membership is a commitment to responsibility, awareness and the claim of sustainability as fundamental pillars in the management of the destination. The Port of Roses, for its part, has been recognized with Biosphere Committed membership.
The municipality of Roses has been officially recognized as a Biosphere Certified destination, a distinction that endorses its commitment to sustainability and continuous improvement in tourism management. The certification, awarded by the Responsible Tourism Institute (RTI), confirms that Roses meets international standards in terms of sustainable development, according to the principles of the 2030 Agenda and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations.
This recognition comes after successfully passing the process of evaluation and verification of the sustainable practices implemented in the destination, which cover key areas such as environmental protection, efficient resource management, participatory governance and the promotion of fairer and more inclusive tourism.
Roses has a solid track record in sustainability. Since the approval of its Local Action Plan for Sustainability in 2003, the municipality has continued to advance with initiatives such as the Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan, the EMAS and ISO 14001 environmental certifications for the urban beaches and marina, and the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism (CETS) for the Natural Park. Roses has also recently activated its Destination Tourism Sustainability Plan – RTR, which promotes the transformation of the tourism model towards a more resilient and regenerative approach.
Commitment to the future
With this new milestone, Roses joins the international network of destinations and entities that work under the Biosphere methodology, committed to a system of continuous improvement that guarantees transparency, co-responsibility and alignment with the great global challenges of tourism in the 21st century.
Once Biosphere Certification has been obtained as a destination committed to sustainability, Roses must work annually on its action plan to pass the audits that certify that the destination not only remains committed but also continuously improves on its path towards sustainable tourism in the territory.
The Port of Roses obtains the Biosphere Committed certificate
The Port Esportiu de Roses has been recognized with the Biosphere commitment certificate, which certifies the beginning of the path towards sustainability with the Biosphere Sustainable platform and access to a whole set of sustainable actions that will allow it to expand its Biosphere Plan and advance towards sustainability certification.
With private sector participation
The objective of adhering to this seal is to contribute to economic growth that promotes sustainable and responsible tourism services, which is why the program is also open to the participation of the private sector, involving companies in the sector and offering them the opportunity to participate in the program that will allow them to also be certified with the Biosphere seal.
In Roses, there are already 13 Biosphere companies (including hotels, campsites, shops, restaurants, training centers, etc.) and the Tourism Department continues to work and offer information sessions to get many more companies to join the project.
"This action is included in the “PSTD Roses Town Council - Regeneration Tourism Roses”, financed by the Extraordinary Program for Tourism Sustainability in Destinations approved within the framework of the Recovery and Resilience Mechanism, within the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, Funded by the European Union – Next Generation EU."
