News | 15/06/2026

Sílvia Ripoll Cayuela (Junts per Roses) has been elected mayor of Roses during the plenary session of the Roses City Council held this afternoon in the council chamber. The candidate has achieved the absolute majority of the vote, obtaining a total of 9 votes from the 17 councilors who make up the corporation.

The extraordinary session to elect the new mayor began promptly at 1 p.m., with the assembly hall full. The first item on the agenda was the presentation of the resignation of the outgoing mayor, Josep Maria Martínez Chinchilla, who stated that " in compliance with the 2023-2027 legislative term agreement between the political groups PSC-CP, Junts per Roses and Gent del Poble, after 3 years of mandate, I present my resignation from the position of mayor and maintain the position of councilor of the Roses City Council." In his speech, Martínez took stock of the three years that have passed, highlighting "the municipal stability and the fluid coordination between departments during the mandate."

The session was then chaired by the first Deputy Mayor, Fèlix Llorens Palou, who asked the different spokespersons of each municipal group whether or not they wanted to present their candidacy, with the following result: Joan Plana Sagué for ERC-SOM, Sílvia Ripoll Cayuela for Junts per Roses, Pere Gotanegra Julià for Lliures and Ignasi Mulleras Vinzia for VOX, while the PSC, Gent del Poble de Roses and PP formations chose not to present their candidacy.

Once the 4 candidates had been nominated, the vote was taken, carried out by a show of hands, where the 3 councilors from JxRoses, the 4 from the PSC and the 2 from GDPR voted for the candidate Sílvia Ripoll.

According to the result of the vote, Sílvia Ripoll has been proclaimed mayor and has pledged her position. The outgoing mayor, Josep M. Martínez, has handed over the baton to the new mayor, who has now taken over the presidency of the session. The event has continued with a turn of interventions by the different spokespersons of the municipal groups.

Finally, in her inauguration speech, the new mayor highlighted her desire to lead "a close, accessible and open mayorship. I like the politics that are done alongside the people: that listen before deciding, dialogue before confronting and look for solutions before making excuses. I will work for a Roses that is relevant to the Empordà, where living, working and entrepreneurship are possible."

The event was attended by authorities such as Congress members Marta Madrenas and Josep M. Cervera; Parliament members Sònia Martínez and M. Àngels Planas; the Auditor General of Catalonia, Ferran Roquer; former mayors of Roses, mayors of the region and local authorities.
