News | 11/04/2022

Yesterday morning the reception and welcome ceremony for the ninth Master of Sea Rescue organised by the Deutsche Lebens-Rettungs-Gesellschaft (DLRG) took place at Roses Town Hall, as part of the programme of the Roses Cup International Tournaments. Throughout the week, the 250 participants will compete and perform the different tests on the beach of Sta Margarita, in front of the Hotel Marian, where they are staying.

During the ceremony held yesterday, the Mayor of Roses, Joan Plana Sagué, and the Councillor for Sports, Verònica Medina Flores, welcomed the organisers and participants of this Masters. With more than 1,700,000 members and sponsors, and made up of a large number of associations and entities, the Deutsche Lebens-Rettungs-Gesellschaft (DLRG) is the leading swimming and lifeguard training organisation in Germany and the largest in the world.

Since its foundation in 1913, its missions have been swimming and lifeguard training, aquatic risk education and aquatic rescue services. Between 1950 and 2020, the DLRG has conducted more than 22.7 million swim tests and almost five million lifeguard tests. Divided into approximately 2,000 local organisations, its volunteers perform some 6 million hours of voluntary work for the population of Germany every year. Some 41,000 members watch over the safety of bathers and water sports enthusiasts for about two million hours a year.

Roses Cup Tournaments, 29 years of sports tourism

The Master of Lifesaving is part of the Roses Cup International Tournaments programme, an activity that began in 1991, and which reaches its 29th edition in 2022, as it will not be held in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID 19.

Throughout its history, more than 100,000 athletes in football, handball, volleyball, beach volleyball and swimming have visited Roses. The stays are always for 7 overnight stays, concentrated in the periods of Easter, Whitsun and October. The different groups and participating clubs usually arrive on Saturdays and start their competitions on Sunday afternoons.
